Get involved with research

The University of Minnesota is Minnesota's only research university. We are striving to be a world leader in research and we want you to join in. There a number of ways you can get involved with research:
  • Each semester our faculty send out a list of the projects they are working on that they want undergraduate student help with.
  • You identify a faculty mentor you want to work with based on their past research and areas of expertise. Take a look at recent faculty sponsors of research in CFANS by major and see what their research interest is.
  • Our Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) office also has a list of past faculty mentors who have worked with undergrad students like yourselves.
  • You can work in a professors lab on campus. Many students work while on campus and these jobs pay really well.
Why do students get involved in research?
  1. A research project and working in a lab looks great on your resume.
  2. Getting to know a professor on a personal basis will help you build your career network. They are connected to their industry community and might be able to help connect you to future employers.
  3. You get paid!! This can help fund a late-night run to Mesa Pizza, or a study abroad trip, or help cover your tuition and fees or books.
